Getting to McLeod Ganj

We have chosen a location that spoke to the both of us. McLeod Ganj is a picturesque town in the Dhauladhar Range of the Himalyan Mountains. It is known as "Little Lhasa"  as it is home of the Tibetan Governement-in-Exile and the Dalai Lama's monastary. Away from the fast paced life of Delhi, this is another very unique side of India not experienced by most.

Although a bit off the beaten track there are numerous ways to arrive at the Fortune Moksha Hotel in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala

Flying

Flights into and out of  Dharamsala/Delhi occur 2 times per day - once with Spice Jet and Once with Air India. The flights are just over an hour and the Kangra Airport is a very nice smaller airport about 1 hour away from the wedding location.

Please add in your RSVP if you would like to travel by air and the dates and our travel agent will be able to get you our group discount.

Bus Tour:

We hope that you will be able to join us for the planned bus tour. If so, we will be ending the tour in Dharamsala. Departure from Dharamsala is then recommended by flight.

Train:

If you are adventurous and wish to travel by train there are trains that arrive in Pathankot. It is then a 2-3 hour drive to McLeod Ganj. We do not recommend this as a method, however if you do choose this please contact our travel agent to assist with train tickets and our travel assistant at the Fortune Moksha to arrange a taxi from Pathankot to McLeod Ganj.

Private Car:

f you wish to travel by car from Delhi it is approximately 9-10 hours by road. If you wish to use this method please alert us in your RSVP of travel dates and number of people and will we provide you with different options for car size and costs.

Accomodations

The wedding is taking place at the Fortune Moksha Hotel and rooms have been blocked for our guests from December 20-23. Rooms are also available at the Best Western only 5 minutes away. The hotel is set on a hill overlooking the Kangra Valley and you can look forward to waking up as the morning fog rolls over the Himilayas to a view that is one to remember. You may take your morning tea in the meditation garden or partake in a morning yoga class in the yoga hut. All meals are included as well as wifi to all of our guests. Feel free to book yourself an appointment at their ayurvedic spa or wander into the unique village of McLeod Ganj which is only a 10 minute car ride away.

If you are attending, please specify requested room type an we will try our best to meet your requests.

Travel Tips

Travel to India

We would suggest that travellers fly into New Delhi and there are many flights from Canada with various airlines. We have partnered with a travel agent based out of Winnipeg who has assisted us in trying to get the best rates for our flights - including into Dharmshala. She has priced out a few options - which of course are subject to change. She can be contacted at:

Cindy Gaudet

Please feel free to contact her to individualize your routing and mention that it is for the Kapur/Fox wedding :)

Visas

Canadians travelling to India do require a tourist visa.

It may be easier to send in your passport to the company the Indian Embassy has privately contracted to do Visa's. It is not done directly at the embassy. Please visit:

http://www.blsindia-canada.com/

They can also be easily obtained online a MAXIMUM of 30 days prior from https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html

The application is reasonably simple – however you may need to alter your picture size which can be frustrating for some. You may also take quite a bit of time at the airport in Delhi to get fingerprinted. As a result I would suggest getting the Visa through BLS.

Accommodations in New Delhi

If you are on the bus trip - relax! We have accommodation booked for you :)

For those travelling on your own - when you arrive in New Delhi, we would suggest staying  at a hotel near to the airport as it is convenient after a very long flight to quickly get to your hotel room without having to battle traffic. They are also centrally located to many areas of Delhi.  Please do be advised though, that travel in and around Delhi can take varying lengths of times depending on traffic.

We recommend staying at the following 3 hotels:

JW Marriott Hotel New Delhi Aerocity – 5 stars

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/delap-jw-marriott-hotel-new-delhi-aerocity/

Lemon Tree Premier, Delhi Airport – 4 stars

Red Fox Hotel, Delhi Airport – 3 stars

https://www.lemontreehotels.com/red-fox-hotel/delhi/hotels-delhi.aspx

All three hotels are next to each other and the Red Fox and Lemon Tree Hotel are connected.  If you plan on booking in either Lemon Tree Hotel and Red Fox please let us know when you book your flights as we have discussed a group rate discount.

ATMs

ATMs are generally widely available that accept international bank cards or credit cards.

We do not suggest exchanging money prior to coming to India. You will save on conversion fees and it is more convenient to just use the ATMs. You can typically take 10,000 INR out at a time – however I have ‘tricked’ many machines by just doing 10,000 INR repeated times.

Phone and Internet

India has a very good cell phone network. We would suggest that anyone wanting to can purchase a sim card at the Delhi airport upon arrival. In order to do so you must bring 2-4 passport photos. We will provide you with names and addresses to use as contacts for India.  We would suggest purchasing Airtel or Vodafone.

Data plans can also be purchased for reasonable prices.  Wireless internet is available at the Fortune Park Moksha.

Health & Safety

India can be a country with some risks. Whenever travelling it is important to be aware of those risks and take steps to protect yourself.

We have taken steps to ensure that hotels are of good quality and all food will be hygienically prepared – however there is always the possibility of the unfortunate ‘Delhi belly’. We highly recommend making an appointment with a travel health specialist to ensure your vaccines are up to date. We also would recommend the oral vaccine “Dukoral’ which is for cholera and the most common form of travellers diarrhea. Although the evidence is mixed- there has been some in support of its use.  We both use it every time we go to India and feel it has definitely helped.

Prior to departure we will provide guests by email with a list of important numbers and information. Among them will be a list of reputable hospitals in the locations we are travelling.

Travellers Insurance should also be bought prior to departure from your home country.

Robbery and violence can occur when travelling.  Please ensure you are using common sense and travelling alone is not necessarily advised. Please ask advice from a member of the tour team if planning on heading off on your own.

Roads can be dangerous in India- when in Taxis or hired cars, we recommend ensuring seat belts are available and please take a photo of the car license to send to others in case anything goes wrong.  Don’t take risks you wouldn’t in your home country.

Uber has a very large presence in major cities of India, including Delhi. This is an easy and convenient way of arranging a car allowing you to pay by Visa and by keeping a record of who your driver was.
